Why?

As I reflect on my years at G Adventures, it became tough to pick out one project that highlighted the experience of working with such amazing people. In searching through various files and folders, what kept appearing was the many, many badges I would create. These badges remind me that the programs we develop are not just about the content. Creating a brand and identity with your content is just as important, because it helps connect the individual to what they’re about to experience.

What?

These badges were designed with a dual purpose. First, to recognise the individuals who had completed a course or experience with the company. Second, and most importantly, to create a visual identity for a learning program. Badges were not designed for all programs, but many significant learning programs and experiences were assigned a badge through our intranet and HR platform. Some of these badges were part of development plans, and some were awards with a monetary bonus.

How?

When a new program was being developed, we would work with stakeholders to create a brand for the specific learning program. These programs would have a unique name and visual identity. I would develop these badges using Adobe Illustrator, and would iterate on the design with the stakeholder and our Brand team to ensure they felt true to the G Adventures identity.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I would create these badges using something small to symbolise and reference the content of the learning program.

In the above example, this was a badge awarded to tour guides being trained to run our Wellness tours. These tours focused on physical and mental wellbeing, such as a yoga retreat.

The G Scout Badge

This badge was for a program I led called Exchanger. This was an experiential learning program which included a transfer to a different G Adventures office, 1-on-1 coaching, and mentoring.

With the brand identity, a logo, and a badge communicating and creating excitement for these programs became easier and resulted in higher engagement from our staff.
